Susan Schaufeld, PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla – Authorities in Palm Beach Gardens have confirmed that an 81-year-old woman has died following a traffic incident that occurred earlier this week in the PGA National community. The Palm Beach Gardens Police Department said the incident remains under investigation as officials continue to review the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The incident took place on the morning of January 27 along Ryder Cup Boulevard, near the intersection with Glencairn Road. Police reported that officers were dispatched to the area shortly after 8:25 a.m. after receiving a call involving a pedestrian who had been struck by a large truck. When officers arrived, they found the woman on the roadway and immediately began providing emergency assistance.

Fire Rescue personnel responded to the scene and transported the woman to a nearby hospital for further medical care. Authorities later identified the pedestrian as Susan Schaufeld, a resident of the community. At the time she was taken to the hospital, officials said she was in critical condition and receiving treatment for serious injuries.

Police confirmed on January 29 that Schaufeld had died while hospitalized. Officials said her family has been notified of her passing. No additional information about her condition or treatment was released out of respect for the family’s privacy.

According to investigators, the vehicle involved in the incident was a Waste Management dump truck. Police said the driver, a 65-year-old man, was later issued a traffic citation for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a marked crosswalk. Authorities emphasized that the citation is part of the ongoing investigation and does not conclude the review of the incident.

The Palm Beach Gardens Police Department stated that the traffic homicide investigation remains active. Investigators are continuing to examine evidence, review traffic conditions, and determine whether additional factors may have contributed to the crash. No further enforcement actions have been announced at this time.

Officials also reminded drivers and pedestrians of the importance of caution and awareness, particularly in residential communities and areas with frequent foot traffic. Police encourage motorists to remain alert, slow down near intersections and crosswalks, and always yield when required by law. Pedestrians are similarly urged to remain aware of their surroundings when crossing streets.
