The morning of February 8, 2026, began like any other day, but it soon became one marked by tragedy and loss following a fatal motor vehicle crash in Jasper County that involved Miles Williams, 71, of DeMotte, Indiana, and David Stahl, 46, also of DeMotte, Indiana. At approximately 8:54 a.m. CST, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department responded to reports of a serious collision at the intersection of State Road 110 and U.S. Highway 231—an incident that would claim a life and leave others forever changed.

According to the initial investigation, a 2015 white Ford F-250 driven by David Stahl was traveling eastbound on State Road 110 and entered the fully marked four-way stop at U.S. Highway 231. As he proceeded through the intersection, his vehicle was struck by a southbound semi-tractor trailer operated by Miles Williams.
Evidence gathered at the scene, along with witness statements, indicated that the semi-tractor trailer failed to stop for the posted stop sign and flashing red lights before entering the intersection. Following the impact, the semi left the east side of the roadway and struck a NIPSCO utility pole. The force of the collision underscored the severity of the crash and the devastating consequences that followed.
Miles Williams was pronounced deceased at the scene. His passing marks a profound loss—one felt deeply by family, friends, and all who knew him. At 71 years old, Miles carried a lifetime of memories, experiences, and connections. He was more than a driver involved in a crash; he was a human being whose life had meaning, history, and people who loved him. His death leaves an irreplaceable void in the hearts of those closest to him.
David Stahl sustained serious injuries and was airlifted from the scene by Lutheran Air to Christ Advocate Hospital in Oak Lawn, Illinois, where he received medical treatment. Authorities reported that airbags deployed in his vehicle and that he was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Thoughts remain with David and his loved ones as he continues his recovery, carrying with him the weight of a tragic morning that will not be easily forgotten.
The investigation also revealed that there was no airbag deployment in the semi-tractor trailer and that Miles Williams was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision. The roadway remained closed for approximately five hours as investigators carefully processed the scene and crews worked to clear the wreckage.
Numerous agencies and services responded with urgency and professionalism, including the Keener Township Fire Department and Medics, Wheatfield Ambulance Service, Hebron Fire Department, Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, DeMotte Police Department, Indiana State Police, Jasper County Coroner’s Office, NIPSCO, Jasper County REMC, and Cheever’s Towing. Their collective efforts ensured that the scene was handled with care and respect amid the gravity of the loss.
As the investigation continues, the focus turns to remembrance. This tragedy serves as a solemn reminder of how quickly life can change and how fragile every moment truly is. Today, hearts are heavy as a community reflects on lives lost and extends compassion to all those affected.
May Miles Williams be remembered not for the circumstances of his passing, but for the life he lived and the legacy he leaves behind. May his loved ones find comfort in cherished memories, strength in one another, and peace in time.
Rest in peace. You will be remembered.
