Inside the Chaos at Brown University: Body-Worn Camera Footage Reveals Police Response After Deadly Campus Shooting

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Newly released body-worn camera footage from December 13 offers a harrowing look at the moments after a deadly mass shooting at Brown University, showing police officers urgently clearing the Barus and Holley Building amid confusion and fear. The heavily redacted video, along with police and fire reports and 911 calls, was made public following multiple records requests in the days after the tragedy.

The roughly 20-minute video captures Providence Police Department officers and Rhode Island State Police rushing into the engineering and physics building, directing people to get down and methodically clearing rooms. In one moment, an officer can be heard saying, “As of now, we have no idea who this person could be,” underscoring the uncertainty that defined the early response. At the time, authorities did not yet know the identity of the alleged shooter.

According to investigators, Claudio Neves Valente opened fire on a study group inside the building, killing two students and injuring nine others. The violence did not end on campus. Two days later, authorities say Valente fatally shot MIT professor Nuno Loureiro at his home in Brookline, Massachusetts, intensifying the shock felt across academic communities in the region.

The released footage and records provide a sobering timeline of events and highlight the rapid, coordinated response by law enforcement during an active and evolving threat. For many, the video serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of safety on college campuses and the lasting trauma such incidents leave behind.
