The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has identified the man who died following an officer-involved shooting Wednesday afternoon in Northeast Washington, D.C.

According to police, 43-year-old Julian Marquette Bailey of Northeast was fatally shot by a member of the U.S. Marshals Service.
Authorities said the incident began around 2:10 p.m. when MPD received a call reporting that a man was making threats with a firearm near Kenilworth Terrace and Hayes Street NE. Sixth District officers responded to the area and spoke with a woman who reported being involved in a dispute with a man inside a convenience store.
A police report states that the woman told officers the man followed her to her vehicle after the argument and displayed a firearm. She was able to leave the area safely and contacted authorities.
MPD said members of the U.S. Marshals Service and U.S. Park Police later located a suspect matching the description a few blocks away of Hayes Street NE. According to police, the suspect was inside a vehicle when a U.S. marshal discharged a firearm, striking Bailey.
Bailey was pronounced deceased. Authorities have not released details regarding the specific circumstances that led to the use of force.
MPD confirmed that no Metropolitan Police officers were present at the time of the shooting. The department stated that its internal team responsible for investigating all law enforcement-involved shootings in the District is reviewing the incident.
The shooting occurred near Cesar Chavez Middle Public Charter School, not far from the Minnesota Avenue Metro station. The school was placed on lockdown as a precaution following reports of gunfire. Officials later lifted the lockdown once the scene was secured.
News footage from the scene showed a significant law enforcement presence, with Hayes Street NE temporarily blocked off as investigators processed the area.
Authorities have not indicated whether additional information will be released in the coming days. The investigation remains active as officials work to determine the full sequence of events.
