Tumbler Ridge School Shooting: A Small Community Shattered by Unthinkable Tragedy

The small British Columbia community of Tumbler Ridge is reeling after a tragic mass shooting that left multiple victims dead and dozens injured at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and a nearby residence in one of the deadliest such attacks in Canadian history. The violence, which unfolded on February 10, 2026, has brought deep sorrow not only to families and friends of the victims but to the entire region and nation.

According to authorities, the tragic incident began in the early afternoon when reports of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School triggered an immediate emergency response and lockdown. When police entered the school, they located multiple victims and later confirmed that six individuals were found dead inside the school, with another dying en route to hospital. Two other victims were discovered deceased at a nearby residence thought to be connected to the shooting. In total, authorities reported nine victims killed, excluding the suspected shooter, and 27 others wounded, including some seriously injured who were airlifted to area hospitals.

The suspected shooter was found dead at the scene from what appeared to be a self‑inflicted injury, and investigations are ongoing to determine motive and connections to the victims.

In a show of national solidarity and mourning, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canadian flags will be flown at half‑mast on all federal buildings for seven days to honour the victims and support the grieving community.

The close‑knit town of Tumbler Ridge, with its population of fewer than 2,500 people, has been profoundly affected by this devastating loss, as families, educators, students, first responders, and neighbours come to terms with the aftermath and begin the long journey toward healing.
