Authorities in Virginia are investigating a fatal crash involving a motorcycle and an SUV that occurred Thursday evening in Roanoke County.

According to the Virginia State Police, the collision happened around 5:09 p.m. on Interstate 581 southbound near the entrance ramp to Valley View Mall.
State police say a 2025 Harley-Davidson motorcycle was traveling southbound when it collided with the rear of a 2011 Ford Explorer. Investigators reported that the motorcycle had been moving at a high rate of speed and changing lanes shortly before the crash occurred.
The motorcyclist was identified by authorities as 58-year-old Anthony Lee Spencer of Roanoke. Police said Spencer was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Ford Explorer sustained injuries that authorities described as non-life-threatening and was transported to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for medical evaluation and treatment.
Investigators from the Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team responded to assist with examining the scene and gathering evidence. Their work includes reviewing roadway conditions, vehicle damage, and other factors that may help determine what led to the collision.
Traffic in the area was impacted while emergency responders and investigators worked at the scene Thursday evening.
Officials say the investigation remains ongoing, and additional details may be released once the review is complete. Authorities have not indicated whether any charges or citations are expected as the investigation continues.
