Authorities reported that 56-year-old Daryle Fitzgerald of Bluffton was driving a Ford Mustang when he left the roadway and struck a tree. The impact caused Fitzgerald to be ejected from the vehicle. Moments later, he was struck by an oncoming SUV. Emergency personnel arrived quickly, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate the factors that led to the crash.
The second and most devastating incident took place late Sunday night on Lady’s Island. The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office identified the victims as 17-year-old Amya Fields of Beaufort and 54-year-old Louis Carbonneau of St. Helena Island. The collision occurred near the intersection of U.S. 21 (Sea Island Parkway) and Eustis Landing Road and involved a Subaru and a Honda in a head-on crash.
According to the Lady’s Island–St. Helena Fire District, the force of the collision caused one of the vehicles to catch fire. First responders worked swiftly to extinguish the flames and assist victims. Tragically, both Fields and Carbonneau were pronounced dead. Another 17-year-old passenger involved in the crash was transported to a hospital in critical condition. Authorities are continuing to investigate what caused the vehicles to collide.
The third fatal accident occurred Monday evening in the Lobeco area. Coroner officials confirmed that 48-year-old Scott McKeever of Bluffton was struck by a semi-truck while walking along U.S. 17 (Charleston Highway). Despite rapid emergency response efforts, McKeever died at the scene.
