Philip Lovely Obituary Death; Butler County Man Charged After Allegedly Ambushing Deputy, Setting Car on Fire and Stabbing Officer

Authorities have released the mug shot of 41-year-old Philip Lovely, the suspect accused of violently attacking a law enforcement officer in Butler County, according to Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones. Investigators say Lovely allegedly set his own vehicle on fire in an apparent attempt to ambush Deputy Mike Farthing, then stabbed the deputy in the back through his protective vest with a 10-inch butcher knife. Lovely is currently being held in the Middletown jail and faces multiple serious felony charges.

Sheriff Jones stated that the incident unfolded when Lovely allegedly used the burning vehicle as a distraction to lure responding officers into a dangerous situation. As Deputy Farthing approached, investigators say Lovely attacked from behind, stabbing him through his vest. Despite being wounded, Deputy Farthing was able to fight back, wrestle with Lovely, and ultimately contain the situation, preventing further harm until additional officers arrived.

Authorities report that Deputy Farthing was transported to the hospital following the attack. As of the latest update, he remains in stable condition and continues to receive medical care. Law enforcement officials credited his training and quick response for preventing what could have been a far more tragic outcome.

According to information shared with investigators, moments before the stabbing, Lovely allegedly told the deputy, “This is your unlucky day.” Officials noted the irony of the statement, as the suspect was ultimately subdued and taken into custody.

Philip Lovely has been formally charged with arson, felonious assault, and attempted murder of a law enforcement officer. He remains behind bars at the Middletown jail and is scheduled to appear in court today at 1:30 p.m.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing. Authorities have not released additional details regarding a possible motive, but officials emphasized the seriousness of the attack and reiterated their support for Deputy Farthing and his family as he recovers.

More updates are expected following Lovely’s court appearance.
