LENOIR, N.C. — With heavy hearts, we remember and honor the life of David Dula, 76, of Morganton, who tragically lost his life in a fatal collision early Wednesday morning, February 11, 2026, in Caldwell County.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, troopers responded at approximately 2:14 a.m. to a single-vehicle crash along US 64 near Helton Hartley Place. David was traveling west in a 2008 Volvo SUV when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle crossed the centerline. It struck a guardrail, overturned, then collided with a tree before becoming engulfed in flames.
David succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Initial findings indicate that neither speed nor impairment appeared to be contributing factors in the crash. Authorities temporarily shut down US 64 for about an hour as they carefully processed the scene. No other vehicles were involved, and David was the sole occupant of the SUV. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol continues its investigation, and no further details have been released regarding road conditions or additional possible causes.
While the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking accident remain under review, what remains certain is the profound loss felt by those who knew and loved David Dula.
At 76 years old, David carried with him a lifetime of experiences, wisdom, and quiet strength. He was a member of the Morganton community — a place where roots run deep and neighbors become extended family. Those who knew him will remember more than the tragic details of a single morning; they will remember the man he was — the stories he shared, the lessons he imparted, and the steady presence he brought into the lives of others.
For family and friends, this sudden loss leaves an ache that words cannot fully capture. The early morning hours that marked his passing are now forever etched into memory, but so too are the many years of laughter, dedication, and love that defined his life.
In moments like these, communities come together — not only to mourn, but to reflect. David’s life reminds us of the fragility of each day and the importance of cherishing time with those we hold dear. Every shared meal, every phone call, every quiet drive home becomes infinitely more meaningful in the face of loss.
As investigators continue their work, loved ones focus instead on celebrating a life lived across seven decades — a life filled with milestones, relationships, and memories that cannot be erased by tragedy. Though his journey ended far too suddenly, the imprint he leaves behind will endure in the hearts of those who loved him.
We extend our deepest condolences to the Dula family and all who are grieving this profound loss. May they find comfort in cherished memories, strength in one another, and peace in knowing that David’s life mattered deeply.
Rest in peace, David Dula. You will be remembered.
