The Gonzales community is mourning the tragic and heartbreaking loss of 60-year-old Carmen Vega Tapia, whose life was taken Friday night in an incident that has left family, friends, and neighbors in shock.
According to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a residence in the 28000 block of Carr Road, just outside the city limits of Gonzales, on February 13, 2026, at approximately 9:27 p.m. Emergency dispatchers had received a 911 call from a man who reported that his wife was bleeding and that he did not know what had happened.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they located Ms. Tapia suffering from a severe laceration. Fire and ambulance personnel immediately began life-saving measures before transporting her to a local trauma center. Despite the urgent medical response and continued efforts by hospital staff, she tragically succumbed to her injuries.
During the initial investigation, detectives detained the caller, identified as 66-year-old Pablo Villasenor of Gonzales. Authorities reported that during their contact with him, they observed he was bleeding and determined he had sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
